Miners Castle (medium)

The Miners Castle rock formation is one of the iconic features along the Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore located just east of Munising, Michigan in the state’s upper peninsula.
I looked for a vantage point different from where the throngs of tourists were located and I didn’t have to walk very far. Along a chain link fence line just yards from a park’s viewing platform, my photo assistant Mr. Salty Dog waited patiently while I located the exact spot between tree branches. I took my time switching lenses to obtain these three different compositions:
— Miners Castle (medium) as featured at the top of this page;
— Miners Castle (wide) as featured on its own detail page in addition to the bottom of this one; and,
— Miners Castle (close-up), with a treatment like I did with the wide version.
As I used to tell my college-level students, to achieve a portfolio-level image of a landmark location, take the time to think differently than the crowd. Know that I don’t ever use the cliche, “think outside the box” because my life’s mantra is, “What box?!”
